Apple’s Ambitious Pursuit: Requesting LG Display and Samsung to Develop ‘Bezel-less’ iPhone Display

In an exciting development, Apple is reportedly taking significant strides towards introducing a bezel-less iPhone, and to achieve this groundbreaking design, it has approached its display suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display. The tech giant has requested these companies to develop organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are completely devoid of side bezels, aiming to create a sleek and futuristic appearance while ultimately eliminating bezels entirely. This move reflects Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and aesthetics in the world of smartphones.

For Apple, achieving a truly bezel-less iPhone screen is no easy feat. This ambitious goal requires significant advancements in two key areas: thin-film encapsulation (TFE) and under-panel camera (UPC) technologies, along with effective antenna space management. The company envisions a flat display with angular design, differentiating it from the optical ‘magnifying glass effect’ commonly observed in smartphones with curved displays. By focusing on a completely flat bezel-less design, Apple aims to avoid any distortions and vulnerabilities to external shocks.

To implement a bezel-less design without resorting to curved displays, the circuits that are traditionally placed in the bezel area must be ingeniously bent beneath the display. This presents challenges related to antenna space and interference, which the engineers and researchers at Samsung Display and LG Display are diligently working to overcome.

However, several hurdles still exist in the pursuit of a bezel-less screen, particularly concerning thin film encapsulation and under-panel camera technologies. Apple requires thinner inorganic and organic film layers to effectively protect against moisture and oxygen, but maintaining the necessary barrier properties and flexibility proves to be intricate. Additionally, integrating the under-panel camera module necessitates striking a delicate balance to prevent noticeable discrepancies in pixel density with the rest of the display.

Despite the challenges, Apple remains determined to create a bezel-less OLED panel, and as a preliminary step, it has already begun gradually reducing the front bezel of its iPhone lineup. Recent efforts to make the lower front bezel of the iPhone 15 series Pro lineup thinner align with this vision. However, achieving the desired outcome poses formidable challenges, with LG Display facing setbacks in meeting Apple’s stringent requirements.

The concept of near-full screen displays with reduced bezels is a common goal across the smartphone industry, but Apple’s approach to a truly bezel-less design sets it apart. The company seeks to deliver an innovative OLED panel that provides a seamless and immersive display experience for iPhone users, without resorting to curved displays like some competitors.

As technology continues to evolve, the realization of a genuinely bezel-less iPhone is still on the horizon, driving manufacturers to explore new frontiers of innovation and aesthetics in the realm of smartphones. Apple’s collaboration with Samsung Display and LG Display on OLED technology highlights its commitment to redefining the smartphone experience and further cementing its position as a leader in the industry. The future of bezel-less smartphones is indeed exciting, with Apple leading the way in this pioneering endeavor.
